Reasons of the heart

The heart has its reasons
of which the reason knows nothing….
It is the heart which perceives God
and not the reason.
That is what faith is:
God perceived by the heart,
not by the reason.

Books, vanity and glory

Vanity is so anchored in the heart of man that . . . those who write against it want to have the glory of having written well; and those who read it desire the glory of having read it.

A God-shaped void

What else does this longing and helplessness proclaim, but that there was once in each person a true happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace? We try to fill this in vain with everything around us, seeking in things that are not there the help we cannot find in those that are there. Yet none can change things, because this infinite abyss can only be filled with something that is infinite and unchanging – in other words, by God himself. God alone is our true good.

–Blaise Pascal

Enough light

There is enough light
for those who want to believe
and enough shadows to blind
those who don’t.

–Blaise Pascal
