Bewildering Grace

In Christ, we are adopted by God,
we are chosen without deserving,
loved without earning,
and saved without effort.

The astounding offer

The whole offer which
Christianity makes is this:
that we can,
if we let God have His way,
come to share in
the life of Christ.

–C. S. Lewis

The best sentence Calvin wrote

waterfall 20b

We see that our whole salvation and all its parts are compre-hended in Christ. We should therefore take care not to derive the least portion of it from anywhere else. If we seek salvation, we are taught by the very name of Jesus that it is “of him.” If we seek any other gifts of the Spirit, they will be found in his anointing. If we seek strength, it lies in his dominion; if purity, in his conception; if gentleness, it appears in his birth. For by his birth he was made like us in all respects that he might learn to feel our pain.

If we seek redemption, it lies in his passion; if acquittal, in his condemnation; if remission of the curse, in his cross; if satisfaction, in his sacrifice; if purification, in his blood; if reconciliation, in his descent into hell; if mortification of the flesh, in his tomb; if newness of life, in his resurrection; if immortality, in the same; if inheritance of all blessings, in his Kingdom; if untroubled expectation of judgment, in the power given to him to judge. In short, since rich store of every kind of good abounds in him, let us drink our fill from this fountain, and from no other.

Connected to the Vine

It is only by being grafted into Christ that we produce good fruit. Other religions say, “Do good and you will become good.” Christianity says, “Be in Christ, and you will do good.” The meaning of the Atonement and the Blood that washes away our sins is that we are grafted into Christ, I in Him, and He in me. It is a bitter sprig which is grafted into the tree, but, once it is grafted in, the sweet juice of the tree flows through the bitter sprig and makes it sweet.

No more to offer

Paradise by Lysa.Fontaine 1 copy

If you are a Christian, I have no blessing to offer you, because you have them all in Jesus Christ. All you can do is begin to discover the blessings in Him that you already have but have not yet possessed in experience.

The moment you are redeemed and the moment the Lord Jesus is come to indwell your redeemed humanity, God has given you the plenitude of heaven. You will never be wealthier than the day you were redeemed, but you can live in self-imposed poverty for the rest of your life if want do. What we want to do is to discover how to explore and enjoy all that God has already given you if you are saved. It will be the Devil’s business to prevent it.

–Major W. Ian Thomas

What we were made for

Fallcolorsphotosroad_thumb1

The Church exists for nothing else but to draw men into Christ . . . If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself are simply a waste of time. God became Man for no other purpose . . . It is the only thing we were made for. And there are strange, exciting hints in the Bible that when we are [fully] drawn in, a great many other things in Nature will begin to come right. The bad dream will be over: it will be morning.

–C. S. Lewis

Alive with His life

hang gliding 2

When you surrender to Christ, you surrender to the most creative and dynamic Person on this or any other planet.

You begin to be alive with His life,
enlightened with His light,
loving with His love.

You have surrendered to creativity. Therefore His yoke is easy, for you are made by the Creator for creation.

One of the most difficult aspects of piety is learning that in a sense there is nothing we need to do.

No amount of spiritual experience
will get us more connected to the vine.

No virtue will bring us any more into union with Christ than we are already.

The only issue for us to attend with utter seriousness is what it means to be who we are in union with Christ.

The only issue

One of the most difficult aspects of piety is learning that in a sense there is nothing we need to do.

No amount of spiritual experience
will get us more connected to the vine.

No virtue will bring us anymore into union with Christ than we are already. The only issue for us to attend with utter seriousness is what it means to be who we are in union with Christ.

More than you dared to believe

One way to put the Gospel
in a nutshell is this.
You are more wicked
than you ever dared believe
and yet, you are more loved
and accepted in Jesus Christ
than you ever dared hope.

–Timothy Keller
