Not half so sure

scenic path

When I was young I was sure of everything;
in a few years, having been mistaken
a thousand times, I was not half so sure
of most things as I was before;
at present, I am hardly sure of anything
but what God has revealed to me.

Overtaken by Love

The origin and cause of our redemption is the ineffable love of God the Father, who willed to redeem us by the blood of His own Son . . . who freely took our curse upon Him, and imparts His blessing and merits to us; and the Holy Spirit, who communicates the love of the Father and the grace of the Son to our hearts. When we speak of this . . . we speak of the inmost mystery of the Christian faith.

–John Wesley (1703 -1791)

Love and holiness

We must love God
before we can be holy at all;
this being the root of all holiness.
Now, we cannot love God,
until we know He loves us.

–John Wesley (1703 – 1791)

What is clearly written

What I nightly wish is that you all keep close to the Bible. Be not wise above that which is written. Enjoin nothing that the Bible does not clearly enjoin. Forbid nothing that it does not clearly forbid.

–John Wesley

Passing through once

I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now, let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.
