The final flood of light

The world is full of dark shadows,
to be sure both the world without
and the world within …
But praise and trust him …
for the knowledge that what’s lost
is nothing to what’s found,
and that all the dark there ever was,
set next to light,
would scarcely fill a cup.

–Frederick Buechner

When the singing began

The song of the angels
to sighing humanity
is the beginning
of the infinite mystery
of the Incarnate God.
From this
all light is streaming,
all songs are coming,
all hope is flaming.

The Light Giver

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.”

If anyone has any light,
it comes from Him.
If anyone finds truth,
it comes from Him.
If anyone possesses wisdom,
it comes from Him.
If anyone encounters beauty,
it comes from Him.
If anyone experiences goodness,
it comes from Him.

Stepping into the light

If any man will do His will,
he shall know of the doctrine . . .
John 7:17

The golden rule for understanding spiritually is not intellect, but obedience. If a man wants scientific knowledge, intellectual curiosity is his guide; but if he wants insight into what Jesus Christ teaches, he can only get it by obedience. If things are dark to me, then I may be sure there is something I will not do. Intellectual darkness comes through ignorance; spiritual darkness comes because of something I do not intend to obey.

Walking among trees 4 copy

No man ever receives a word from God without instantly being put to the test over it. We disobey and then wonder why we don’t go on spiritually. ‘If when you come to the altar,’ said Jesus, ‘there you remember your brother hath ought against you . . . don’t say another word to Me, but first go and put that thing right.’ The teaching of Jesus hits us where we live. We cannot stand as humbugs before Him for one second. He educates us down to the scruple. The Spirit of God unearths the spirit of self-vindication; He makes us sensitive to things we never thought of before.

When Jesus brings a thing home
by His word, don’t shirk it.
If you do, you will become
a religious humbug.

Watch the things you shrug your shoulders over, and you will know why you do not go on spiritually. First go – at the risk of being thought fanatical you must obey what God tells you.

More than light

Faith gives us more than light,
more than life: for the “light”
it gives us is God Himself.

The twilight world of faith

The transformation of that darkness into light, as Good Friday gave way to Easter Day, constitutes the basis of the Christian hope—that the dark night of faith will finally give way to the dawn of the resurrection life. But in the meantime we struggle on in the twilight world of faith.

–Alister E. McGrath

Enough light

There is enough light
for those who want to believe
and enough shadows to blind
those who don’t.

–Blaise Pascal

Better than we dared to hope

When we really look at what the Bible says and grasp the implications of the Gospel according to Jesus then we soon discover that this Good News is better than we could have ever dared to hope. It is a story of recovering something that was once thought to be totally lost, redeeming something that was once thought to be absolutely hopeless.

It is a story of God bringing
something wonderfully good
out of something terribly evil.

It is a story of God bringing Life and Light out of so much death and darkness. It is a story of love, and the incredible lengths to which that Love will go to secure the object of its affection.
