Playful universe

The universe is not
God at work but
God at play.

Oblivious to the concert

But so many Christians
are like deaf people at a concert.
They study the programme carefully,
believe every statement made in it,
speak respectfully of the quality of the music,
but only really hear a phrase now and again.
So they have no notion at all
of the mighty symphony
which fills the universe,
to which our lives are destined
to make their tiny contribution,
and which is the self-expression
of the Eternal God.

–Evelyn Underhill (1875 – 1941)

Sharing in the wonder

Dear Lord, grant me the grace of wonder.
Surprise me, amaze me, awe me
in every crevice of your universe.
Each day enrapture me with
your marvelous things without number.
…I do not ask to see the reason for it all:
I ask only to share
the wonder of it all.

–Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907 – 1972)
